We are seeking a General Surgeon to perform onsite General Surgery Physician Services to eligible beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, VA Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS), Fresno, CA.

So, what will the General Surgeon at Terrestris do?

As the General Surgeon you will be responsible for performing a wide range of surgical procedures to treat various conditions affecting the abdomen, digestive tract, skin, and soft tissues. The ideal candidate will have expertise in diagnosing and treating patients requiring both emergency and elective surgeries. This role requires the ability to provide compassionate patient care, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and maintain a high standard of practice.

What does a typical day look like for the General Surgeon?

You will:

  • Perform general surgical procedures such as appendectomies, hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, bowel resections, and other abdominal, digestive, and soft tissue surgeries.
  • Evaluate patients before surgery, explaining procedures, risks, and benefits. Provide post-operative care, monitor recovery, and manage complications.
  • Assess and diagnose conditions requiring surgical intervention, ordering appropriate tests and exams, and developing treatment plans.
  • Respond to emergency cases, such as trauma or acute abdominal conditions, and provide timely surgical intervention.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, ensuring they understand the diagnosis, surgical options, and expected outcomes.
  • Work closely with anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other medical professionals to deliver comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medical histories, surgical procedures, and progress notes.
  • Adhere to all medical, ethical, and legal guidelines related to surgery and patient care.
  • Stay informed of new surgical techniques, technology, and medical research to maintain and enhance skills.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the medical professional we’re looking for if you have:

  • Completed a course of study leading to a degree as a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.).
  • Completed an accredited surgical residency program in General Surgery.
  • A full and unrestricted current license to practice medicine in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Been named Board Certified/Board Eligible by the ABS and are currently certified in BLS, ACLS or equivalency.
  • Proof of a negative Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST) or interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) in accordance with CDC guidance (a negative chest radiographic report for active tuberculosis shall be provided in cases of positive TST or IGRA results).
  • Proof of immunization against:
    • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
    • Varicella
    • Acellular Pertussis (must show of 1 dose of Tdap vaccination)
    • Influenza, unless it is contradicted
    • COVID-19
  • Proof of completing and passing generic self-study blood-borne pathogen training.
  • A current DEA certificate.

Additional skills and abilities should include:

  • The ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
  • Strong surgical skills with the ability to handle a wide range of procedures.
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication skills for effective patient and team interaction.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and respond to emergencies efficiently.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods during surgeries.
  • Dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for surgical procedures.
  • Ability to lift and move patients as needed.
